OSU Recital: Making Music Together

<img src="http://khedgecock.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1994/0x0_1259077.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />This week we are proud to present, the OSU Recital: Making Music Together

The recital will feature ensembles of three or more. The performance, which is part of the Orchestra’s Fall Recital Series, will begin at 7:30 pm at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church at 70 North 200 West in Cedar City.

“Pachelbel Meets U2” by Jon Schmidt will be performed by the Blaine and Kirsten Hofeling Family. Blaine and Kirsten and their nine children recently returned from Nauvoo, Illinois, where they spent the summer performing in the LDS Nauvoo Pageant. The children actively participate in Cascade Strings and Suzuki Strings in Cedar City. The two oldest children perform regularly with OSU. Jon Schmidt is an American pianist from Salt Lake City. He describes his style as "New Age Classical,” though some describe his work as New Age with pop elements of hook and melody.” Jon began songwriting at age 11. His influences include Mannheim Steamroller, Billy Joel, and Beethoven.

The Southern Utah String Quartet will perform two pieces by Luigi Boccherini:

Minuetto con moto for Quartet in A major, Op. 33 No. 6 and Minuetto from Quartet in C major, Op. 39 No. 1. Boccherini was a classical era composer and virtuoso cellist from Italy. At the age of 18 he began playing and composing for Don Luis, the younger brother of King Charles III in Madrid, Spain. During his lifetime, also performed for the French consul Lucien Bonaparte, as well as King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia.

Pianist Tracey Bradshaw, cellist Brooke McNaughton, and violinist Sara Penny will play “Trio in E Minor, Op. 67 Allegro non troppo” by Dmitri Shostakovich. Shostakovich was a Russian composer during the Soviet period. He had a complex and difficult relationship with the Soviet government. His music was officially denounced twice, in 1936 and 1948, and his work was periodically banned. However, he also received a number of honors and state awards and served in the Supreme Soviet, the highest legislative body in the Soviet Union. Despite the official controversy, his works were popular and well received; he is now considered to be the most talented Soviet composer of his generation.

“The Flower Song” from Lakme by Leo Delibes and “Evening Prayer” from the opera Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck will be performed by vocalists Jackie Jackson and Lara Neves. They will be accompanied by pianist Teresa Redd. Jackie will also be singing at the OSU Talent Showcase on Thursday, September 18th at the Heritage Center.

Vocalist Christine Winterrose, pianist Julie Beck, and violinist Sara Penny will perform “Here I Am, Lord” by Daniel L. Schutte, arranged by Craig Courtney. “Here I Am, Lord” is a sacred song that was composed when the Catholic Church first began to use vernacular hymns at Mass. Its words are based on Isaiah 6:8 and Samuel 3. It quickly proved to be a popular song at Catholic masses and Protestant services.

Support for this series comes from the RAP fund for Recreation, Arts, and Parks administered by Cedar City Corporation. Recitals continue each Tuesday through Oct. 7.

Following this recital, Sandy and Ken read this week's listener comments...also a very controversial comment from Nigeria that you won't want to miss!

At the end of the podcast, we give you a sneak preview of the upcoming "Swenson Sister" podcast.

Artist Highlight: Inbal Segev

<img src="http://khedgecock.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1994/0x0_1160629.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />OSU Listener Line (435)258-6377
This week we are proud to highlight concert cellist Inbal Segev.
Inbal Segev is quickly establishing herself as one of the most sought-after young cellists today. She can be heard around the world as a soloist, with chamber ensembles, in recitals and on recordings.

Following debuts with the Israel Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, both under the direction of Zubin Mehta, Ms. Segev has enjoyed an international career. In Europe, Ms. Segev has played with the Helsinki Philharmonic, Radio Symphony of Helsinki, Reutlingen Symphony, Dortmund Philharmonic, and the Orchestre National de Lyon. In the Far East, she has played with the Bangkok Symphony, and in Tokyo, Osaka and elsewhere in Japan in multiple engagements with the New York Symphonic Ensemble. In addition, Ms. Segev has performed with all the major orchestras in Israel, her native country.

Ms. Segev made her Lincoln Center debut at Alice Tully Hall playing Dvorak's cello concerto with the Juilliard Symphony. Elsewhere in North America, solo engagements have included concertos with the Cape Cod Symphony, the Lawton Philharmonic and the Banff Festival Chamber Players, among others. Given her interpretative artistry and virtuosic technique, Inbal is often asked to premiere new works. She gave the American premiere of Sir Arthur Sullivan's cello concerto and performed David Baker's cello concerto at Town Hall in New York City. Max Schubel wrote a cello concerto especially for her.

Ms. Segev devotes much of her time to chamber music and has collaborated with such artists as Emanuel Ax, Glenn Dicterow, Augustin Dumay, Pamela Franck, Gilbert Kalish, Michael Tree and the Vogler Quartet. Recent recitals and chamber music performances have included engagements at the Dumbarton concert series (Washington DC), the Tannery Pond series (upstate NY), Israel's Tel Aviv Museum, Bargemusic (NY), the Kosciuszko Foundation (NY), the Guggenheim Museum (NY), the Maine Center for the Arts and Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, where she gave her debut recital in 1997. Ms. Segev has been a member of the Jupiter Chamber Players since 2005 and previously toured with the American Chamber Players, a piano quintet, throughout the United States.

Ms. Segev's third solo CD, a compilation of Jewish music, was released under the Vox label in April 2004. Her other solo recordings include Boccherini and Beethoven sonatas and the cello concerto written for her by Max Schubel, recorded with the Polish Radio National Symphony. Both recordings are under the "Opus One" label. She also recorded excerpts for the movie sound track of "Bee Season", starring Richard Gere.

Since first receiving the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Scholarship at age seven, Ms. Segev has received numerous prizes and awards. Ms. Segev claimed prizes at the Pablo Casals International competition in Kronberg (2000), The Juilliard Concerto competition (1998), the Paulo International competition in Helsinki (1996), and the Washington International competition (1995), among others.

Ms. Segev appears regularly in live broadcasts. She has appeared on Radio France, Helsinki Television, NPR in Washington and New York, WQXR in New York, the Myra Hess concert series in Chicago and "Kol Hamusica" in Jerusalem. Ms. Segev has also performed in festivals around the globe. She has played at and participated in the Banff, Ravinia, Bowdoin, Olympic and Cape & Islands festivals in North America, the Sienna, Rolandseck and Montpelier festivals in Europe, and Jerusalem's "Mishkenot Sha'ananim" and the Upper Galilee festivals in Israel.

Ms. Segev began her studies in Israel and, with the recommendation of Isaac Stern, came to the United States to continue her studies at the age of 16. She holds a Bachelor's degree from The Juilliard School and a Master's degree from Yale University, where her teachers included Joel Krosnick, Harvey Shapiro and Aldo Parisot. She also studied with Bernard Greenhouse.

The SUU Opera group presents "Too Many Sopranos."
Podcast with permission by: Edwin Penhorwood, TIS Music Publishing and Carol Ann Modesitt.

Four Divas arrive in Heaven and learn there is not enough room for them in the Heavenly Choir as there are not enough Tenors or Basses as most of them have been sent to Hell. The Sopranos must go to Hell and do a selfless act in order to bring more men to Heaven so they can all sing in the Heavenly Choir. A hilarious production that you will not want to miss!

Ken and Sandy go over this week's comments after the production.

This week Ken delves into the music of Eric Schwartz a new friend of the OSU Podcast family. We are sure you will find Eric's special genre of music very interesting!

About Eric Schwartz
Eric Schwartz has studied composition at the Cleveland Institute of Music, New York University, and both the Interlochen and Aspen Summer Music Festivals. Past teachers have included Margaret Brouwer, Donald Erb, George Tsontakis, and Randy Woolf. Primarily interested in a synthesis of musical archetypes, Schwartz is always at work on a variety of genre bending projects. Formative influences include an amalgamation of the glam metal of the late 80's, and the baroque intellectualism of Arnold Schoenberg. His music has been performed at various venues throughout New York City, from The Knitting Factory to Merkin Concert Hall, as well as such far flung places as Bucharest, Romania and Thunder Bay, Ontario. He has received awards and grants from Meet the Composer, ASCAP, The Society for New Music, The Puffin Foundation, The Cleveland Chamber Symphony, and The Ohio Federation of College Music Clubs. Schwartz has served on the faculties of New York University, Hunter College, and the Lucy Moses Music School, and is the artistic director of the Brooklyn, NY based experimental music group Forecast Music (forecastmusic.org). He was recently appointed Resident Composer for the Los Angeles based Tonoi contemporary music ensemble's 2007-2008 season. His debut CD "24 Ways of Looking at a Piano", named one of the top classical CDs of 2005 by All Music Guide, is available now from Centaur Records (http://www.centaurrecords.com). His music is also available on Capstone Records, and Trace Label (France), and is published by Staunch Music (UK).
